Advertising a new small business / customers?

Ive started a new computer repair business in my city and im having trouble getting customers at all..

i have business cards and fliers that look great and simple and to the point, i don’t have much money so my advertising is unfortunately limited.

i offer price matching with the few other companies in the area and ive been passing out my cards (5-8 cards per contact) to doctors offices, lawyer offices, community boards, grocery boards and anything legal and practical. i have received almost no calls im really trying to get myself out there and i know the market is wide open and in need.

what am i doing wrong?

    Try posting ads in the “small business ads” or “services offered” sections on Craigslist. Also try Kijiji and other local free online classifieds – for example, Atlanta has a site called Kudzu.com that allows businesses to post free profiles.

    Leverage social networking sites such as Facebook and connect with local business owners. Set up a Page for your business as well as a personal profile. Also set up a profile on LinkedIN.

    You should also attend networking events hosted by local Chambers of Commerce and business associations. There are lots in every major city – for example, Atlanta has the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce (for Dekalb County), Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce (for Gwinnett County) and so on.

    You may also want to attend other networking events that attract small business owners in specific areas – such as real estate investor associations and others who may need your services – entrepreneurs who are busy running their businesses and don’t have time to deal with, or don’t have the know-how to fix their own computers.

    You can also get he word out about your business by joining a lead-sharing / referral network such as BNI.

    Another “guerilla marketing” approach would be to visit office buildings that have a number of small businesses and give each one a flyer. Larger businesses are likely to have their own IT staff so don’t waste your time or theirs. Market to those who need your services.

    Continually grow your network and ask for referrals (but don’t be pushy).

    Other resources such as SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) provide free advice, resources, and networking for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

    Hello Nate, Love that you are willing to go out canvassing for new business. continue to do this, only do a few little tweaks. I have done this for three of my friends in computer repair and have received best answer every time I offer this solution. 1) Get a business card magnet. you can go to cheap magnets.com, who I use and for less than 20 cents get a business card magnet, if you need a smaller run, go to Staples and get those stick on business card magnets, not as good quality but at least you work up to a quality magnet. 2) for like $20 you can get your logo embroidered on a shirt, get one or two and use them everyday until you can build up your wardrobe. 3) Use a market survey of like 5-6 questions to ask, what are biggest problems with your system, type of system, what would you like your system to do etc? 4) Get business card of decision maker and send regular emails and letters at least monthly, I aim for every 3 weeks in case I forget a week. Give a call every 60-90 days to follow up. This is what is called dripping, It gives you top of the mind brand awareness for little money, and not taking a gamble on advertising. If you order 1000 cheap magnets, I guarantee you will be running around like a chicken with your head cut off with business before you use the whole box.
