Joint Ventures: The Best Small Business Advice I Can Give

As a small business owner, the more creative you can be, the better, because you can find innovative ways to serve your clients well and bring additional income into your business. This small business advice teaches you a strategy for increasing your profits while working less and serving your customers more.

I will show you a profitable and truly exciting way to define economic stimulus for you and your business. Maybe you are a service provider, such as a chiropractor. Perhaps you run a store. You can apply this strategy no matter what type of business you conduct.

Setting up joint ventures (JVs) is a powerful and profitable activity for business owners for a variety of reasons. JVs are multi-tasking powerhouses for you, because they accomplish a number of goals while taking little extra time to establish and track.

1. These deals are profitable for you.
2. They are profitable for the other party involved.
3. They do not require outlays of cash/resources.
4. They can reduce your advertising budget.
5. They provide a higher level of service for your customers or clients.

Here is an example. Remember that you can adapt this to your own business. What you want to do is to start asking yourself questions like: “What else do people who buy from me want and need?” “How can I serve my customers BETTER without taxing my own time and resources?” and “How can I make more money with less effort?”

You will discover that once you start developing the mind of a joint venture facilitator, you will enjoy profitable and creative ideas all the time. Imagine putting together an arrangement such as this one between a flower shop and a photographer.

Sue owns a flower shop. Jerry is a photographer. Since Sue arranges flowers for weddings all the time, it is a good idea for her to serve her clients better by offering them opportunities to take care of other wedding needs. Naturally, some people already have a referral for a photographer from a friend or family member. Some brides, however, will be so happy if they can get a good referral, especially if there is a special deal.

Sue works out a profitable arrangement (no pun intended) with Jerry that works like this: She adds his sample book to her wedding display, and she gives a special card from Jerry with an exclusive offer for her customers. She makes sure that every wedding customers gets one of those photography cards. The customer turns in their card when they hire Jerry. Thus, Jerry gains a new customer and Sue gets a referral fee from Jerry.

Now, you may be wondering how to track this sort of arrangement. You may think that Jerry would honor the discount but simply neglect to pay Sue her fee. Yes, this could happen, however think of what is happening for Jerry. Without advertising in the usual ways, such as radio or newspaper, he is getting new business that he would not otherwise have enjoyed. His profits go up, so even though he is giving a small piece to Sue and a small piece for the customer’s special offer, he is growing his profits without any outlay of cash. In fact, you can see that he is saving money.

Maybe you think this seems like giving up a “piece of the pie,” but remember this: the “pie” – the profit- expands. If Jerry takes in an additional $50,000 because of his arrangement with Sue, he has raised his income without having to scrounge around for new clients. This is as close to effortless as it gets. he would not have made that extra money if not for the JV with Sue. And by offering a value added service to floral customers, Sue earns effortless extra income and makes her clients happy.

Jerry should even be able to cut way back on advertising because of this JV with Sue, because he gets a source of customers. Sue might even think up some other creative ventures that are mutually beneficial, especially as she sees those referral fees add up.

Additionally, Jerry can make a similar arrangement to refer people to Sue’s flower shop. He might take photos of some of her arrangements and include them in his displays. He also gets a card from her, which he gives to all his clients, because many photographic occasions are also flowers occasions. He photographs weddings, family reunions, anniversaries, proms, galas, fundraisers, holiday parties and more. All are fantastic occasions for giving flowers.

Imagine how much more business Sue can gain simply from Jerry’s referrals. She offers special pricing or an upgrade to the customer and a “finder’s fee”/referral fee for Jerry. She also can cut way back on her advertising budget because of JVs. Everybody wins, especially the happy customers.

You can arrange deals such as this for your own business. If you prefer to stay focused on your business and have someone else organize this kind of situation for you, you can engage a Joint Venture Facilitator who will assess your assets and needs and take a sliver of the ever-expanding

Small Business Advice: Are you chasing after these?

It’s almost like an “entrepreneurial curse.” Not in a bad way, but it’s that need to continually be in search of the “next sure thing to grow my business.” That desire isn’t inherently bad, but it can plague us so badly that it literally stops us from creating the very success we desire.

You may know what I’m talking about – bright shiny objects (BSOs). You know you’re chasing after bright shiny objects when you are flying from one thing to another in the hopes that one of those “things” will be the magic bullet to instantly makes your business unbelievably successful. I’ve been there.

I’m all for new ideas – trust me, I’m coming up with new ideas all the time and if you’re an entrepreneur you know the feeling. We tend to have more ideas than we know what to do with. And if that wasn’t enough, more ideas are coming at us daily. Just click “check mail” and stand back, here they come! Bright shiny objects for you to try and buy.

Here are 3 ideas you can implement right now to break free from the BSO frenzy and create lasting success in your business:

1) Embrace the “P” word: Entrepreneurs hate this word – plan. Ugh! But guess what folks, without a plan, it’s hard to know what to listen to and what to NOT listen to as those bright shiny objects start coming at you. Even if your plan is on a napkin or post-it note, stop and write down what your goals are for your business this year. You will at least have something to check your decisions against.

2) Don’t file it away: Now after you write down your plan, it’s time to work the plan. The plan doesn’t go into a file folder. What’s the next action for each part of your plan? When you are focused on your next action each day, it’s much harder for BSOs to distract you. Not only should you know what your next action is, but each day, I’d invite you to write down the top 3-5 actions you must get done. When those top 3-5 actions are staring you in the face, it’s harder to allow bright shiny objects (BSOs) to distract you.

3) Choose according to your plan: When you know what your plan and goals are, you know what education and tools to invest in. As bright shiny objects come your way, you can make a more informed decision as to whether it fits into your plans and goals for the year. For example, if you want to create an information product, then you’d be open to tools and education that would make this possible. You can confidently choose the tools and education that help you accomplish your goals. But you can only do this if you are clear on your goals.

I cannot begin to tell you how many invitations I receive each week for one thing or another. People wanting to partner with me, wanting me to sell their products to my list, invitations to join or attend countless networking and other events, and the list goes on. But I have to choose. I stick with things that I deem beneficial and I check it against my plan and goals for the year. If I don’t discriminate in my decisions, I dilute my efforts, I begin to spin my wheels and I become perpetually distracted.

STOP:

I would invite you to pause right now and make the decision to stop chasing after bright shiny objects (BSOs). Take the next morning or afternoon off and dedicate that time to deciding what your business goals are for the year. Get them out of your head and write them down. And next to each goal, list the sequential actions that would make each goal possible. What resources do you need? Who will be your coach/mentor? What groups do you need to be in? What tools would help make this happen? When you become focused and determined to make those goals a reality, you are less likely to fall victim to bright shiny objects.

Any helpful advice for opening small business in Mexico City?


I am interested in opening a small business, like a general store with groceries, snacks, beverages, serve hot food. etc. Maybe a computer to charge for internet use. Some magazines, etc. I speak basic Spanish. My husband is Mexican and has lived in Mexico City most of his life.
We will save money in U.S., then open the business in Mexico. Any suggestions on how to research this, how much money I need to open this? Any suggestions on what I should sell? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

What are the first steps you need to take when starting a business?

I have outlined some crucial steps that will help guide you in the right direction.

Brainstorm ideas – What kind of business do you want to start?

This is a fun step that will help you decide what you are good at, and what you are passionate about. What gets your juices flowing? Can you picture yourself doing that for a long time? Is it something that you don’t mind working on from sun up to sun down because you enjoy doing it, this is vital to your success. Make a list of 4 things that you see yourself doing, now write down what your strengths and weaknesses are for each one. Let’s say you have an eye for fashion but you can’t design an outfit if your life depended on it, you might want to consider being a stylist instead of a designer. Write down all the areas you think you could add value for each item on your list.

Do some research- Are there businesses like yours out there? If so how well are they doing?

This is another really important step, we are very lucky to live in a time where information is at our fingertips so use the resources available to you. Look for companies who are doing what you want to do (competition is a healthy thing, so don’t be discouraged if you see a lot of people doing what you want to do. It is also an indication that there is a lot of demand for that type of product or service).

Find about 4 businesses that do what it is you are trying to do, and write down their information. Study their website, brochures, and their product or service. Write down what you think their strengths and weaknesses are, and what you would do differently. If you can, find out how they are performing financially and if they are successful.

Put a business plan together -Do you have a plan worked out?

Okay! This is one of the most boring things you will have to do, but it is essential. Jot down a quick business plan, it does not have to be elaborate (not yet anyway). This will be your road map to guide you where you need to go. Write down your business idea, and how you plan to make it a viable business. What kind of startup capital do you want to invest? What do you plan to accomplish in 6 months, 1 year, and finally 5 years. What forms do you need to make your business legal?

Test the market -Do you know if your idea will be well received?

Do NOT jump into any business without testing the market. This is important for two reasons; it let’s you know if there is a demand for your product or service, and it also helps you to see if this is a business you can actually do. If you are starting a service business, I suggest calling a couple of non profit organizations to see if you can offer your service for free. If you cannot offer your service to a non profit, put together a focus group (I would advise against using friends or family for this as their opinions tend to be biased). If you have a product, you can try to sell at a market fair or online on websites like eBay, CafePress or Etsy.

Count your dollars-How much money do you need?

Making a lot of money is an amazing side effect of doing what you love. In order to start a successful business, you don’t need a ton of money to start it. In fact, the less money you spend the [better it is for you in the long run (trust me I learned this the hard way). Some of the most successful multi million dollar companies out there were started with less than $1,000. Write down how much money you think you will need, without sending yourself to the poor house. Do NOT quit your job until you are financially able to do so, and try not to borrow money if you can help it.

Just have fun - Are you still in the game?

Okay you've done all the serious stuff, now it's time to have fun (that's assuming you still want to pursue your business idea). Get excited and look for other individuals who share the same vision as you, and network, network, network. I don't know about you, but I do love a good party every now and then.

Small Business Advice on the Quickest Way to Attract New Clients

The majority of entrepreneurs I’ve worked with are concerned about attracting enough clients. And rightfully so, as customers are the lifeblood of our businesses.

One of my recent subscribers, Kelly, asked what is the quickest way to attract new clients and to create consistent success. This is actually a question I get every single week on my web site.

Here are 4 things that attract customers with absolute speed:

Without a doubt, the #1 thing you can do to attract clients with speed is marketing! But just how you do your marketing determines the results you see in your business.

Consistent Marketing Actions:

This is where I see many entrepreneurs commonly fall short. They market their businesses quite sporadically (if at all). The challenge is that you are both the provider of the product/service you offer and you are also the marketer of the product/service you offer. And you must balance both to achieve success.

More often than not, entrepreneurs are working in the business and not on the business. They’re too busy to implement marketing actions, or to discover new and effective ways to market their businesses. But this is a pitfall that must be overcome because clients and customers will come quickly only through consistent marketing.

So make a commitment to do at least ONE marketing action every single day and stick with it.

Focused Marketing Actions

When I review marketing materials for my clients, the most common mistake I see is that their marketing is unfocused. What I mean is, it’s unclear who they are marketing to. They haven’t really decided on their niche and target market. And if that’s unclear, then the results of their marketing will be minimal at best.

Planned Marketing Actions

In my book, I referred to “random acts of marketing.” This is where we do random things in an attempt to attract the clients we need. We often do things on a whim and prayer rather than with a plan.

It’s important to decide what marketing actions we will implement to create sales. Without a clear plan, clients and cash will be slow or inconsistent in coming your way.

Whether it’s on a scrap of paper or in a MS Word document. Whether it’s a 2-page thing, or a bulleted list. At least write down your key marketing actions. Put it on your computer screen or in your planner and make a marketing action your first action of the day.

Conversion Strategy

When your marketing brings in prospects, a key question to ask is whether you have a clear conversion strategy that turns prospects into paying clients. If that’s not clear, all the marketing in the world won’t actually produce sales.

So be sure to think that through as well – and don’t be afraid to document your conversion strategy. It’s simply the steps you take a prospect through when they are interested in your products and services.

Remember, a business without planned, consistent, focused marketing and without a conversion strategy is more than likely to be a business without clients.

Small Business Advice on How to Create Daily Success [Part 1]

One of the biggest challenges I see when I coach an entrepreneur is how they manage their time daily. I can give them all the success strategies in the world, but they won’t work if the business owner doesn’t make the time to put them into action.

If you own a home based business or even if you’re starting a home based business, one critical part of success is how you flow through the day.

Our days turn into weeks and our weeks turn into months and we look back and wonder why we’re still struggling or why we can’t reach our goals. So let’s start where it all begins – setting up your day for success which will then create successful weeks, and successful months. In part one of this article are 3 sure-fire ways to do just that (and 3 more coming in part 2).

Decide on your top 3

It is critical to first decide what your top 3 actions are for the day. Thanks to Tim Ferris (author of The 4-hour Work Week), my to-do list for the day is now on a bright yellow post-it note on my monitor. At most, I’ll write 5 absolute priorities for the day. These are my “no-excuses, come hell or high water, must-do” actions.

I still have a to-do list that’s a mile long, by the way, and you may as well. Just mentally reframe that to “the list I keep to get things out of my head.” We all need that but don’t feel obligated to get 42 things done today. It’ll never happen and you feel perpetually defeated if you try. Focus on your top 3-5. Anything you get done beyond that is icing on the success cake.

Make them profit-producing

The #1 thing I must do each day is marketing my business or something directly tied to attracting clients or making sales. Some marketing action is always on the list. So take a look at that list of 3-5 things. Is it a list of minutia and administrative tasks or are they profit-producing tasks. Do the profit-producing tasks first – how to market your business, how to get clients, and how to sell your services.

You can get to the other stuff later in the day. Trust me on this one – when you focus on profit-producing tasks and the cash starts coming in, you’ll have money to start delegating administrative tasks. It’s a beautiful thing when that happens.

Shut off your email

My most productive hours are the first hours of the day. If I dare to hit “check mail” I can forget about having a successful day because I remain perpetually distracted. And that goes for checking social media too, by the way. Twitter, Facebook and Linked-in are too distracting and I must stay focused on my top 3-5 cash-producing actions before I start clicking around on the internet.

So try shutting off your email in your most productive hours of the day – yes, close the application entirely and not just minimize it. And for social media, plan when in the day you’ll go there and also how long you’ll stay.
