Only because you are a small business owner, does not mean that you can avoid marketing. Of course that you don’t have to put up a threesome billboard in SoHo like Kelvin Klein did (unless your products stopped being relative somewhere in the 90′s) but you should defiantly have a decent, small budget campaign, that can elevate your business and help you come out strong from this rough economic climate. A smart campaign can help your business make new customers, and make the right customers purchase more from your business.

But where do you start? Strategy? Campaigns? Tactics? Guerrilla? There’s a reason why marketing terminology borrows so heavily from combat training manuals: it’s a war zone out there. To make it out alive, you need to be the best. Not necessarily the biggest, no, you don’t have to be huge to win a war – on the contrary, being small and smart is your best weapon. First think about your strategy. It should consist of a combination of marketing tactics based on market research, consumer insight and close attention to your budget. Sounds scary? It shouldn’t be. Marketing tactics could be as simple as building a website, opening a blog, getting business cards, flyers, direct mail, t-shirts or any other way to get your name out there. Market research means that you need to know what people want at general and how can you help them with your product.

Once you decided on a strategy, it’s time to start marketing. At its simplest, marketing is communication followed by a request. You are telling your potential customers about your products or services and then asking them to give it a try. Such a simple task, yet so complicated because of many small details: how do you describe your product? Where should you put your massage? How can you break through and stand out among so many other products competing for attention? One way is creativity. Great Creative should achieve three things: get you noticed, deliver a message, and drive customers to take action. As a small business, your creative should be unique, unexpected, it doesn’t have to cost millions, it just got to be driven by innovation. Another way is smart Media Planning. Media and Creative must go hand in hand. You should make sure that your message, execution and targeting match perfectly with each media tactic chosen. TV and radio is one possible media channel. For a small business, Direct Marketing could be a good answer.

So what’s next? Get a financial advisor, copy writer, graphic designer, media planner, contact a print manufacturer, great… When will you have time to actually do business? It’s a classic business fantasy: make one phone call for all you marketing needs. Devising strategy, developing creative, buying media, tracking results – why can’t there be a company that does it all?

Many businesses today are choosing to align themselves with charitable organizations for mutual benefit. Aligned together the business has an improved image in the community and more people are made aware of the charity’s cause. It is a win win situation and with the added benefits of tax write offs business are flocking to get involved in donating. The word is out that it pays to be charitable. But, regardless of the reason or impulse – people who donate, people who give will always be applauded.

Here are some questions to help you find a charity and donate with confidence:

How do I find a good cause?

There are many good causes out there and websites such as Charity Navigator and Give.org provide lists of charities, resources and information to help you with your decision. Some businesses choose to align themselves with organizations that expresses the values of local communities and build good will with customers. Be thorough in researching your charity and support a charity you are comfortable with.

Where can I go to research a local charity?

Start out with the charity themselves: ask for a copy of the annual report and information about the organization. A good charity will gladly give information to you.

Check with the Internal Revenue Service : the IRS will be able to confirm their tax exempt status. Organizations have to meet certain government requirements in order to receive tax exempt status.

Ask the Better Business Bureau: the BBB online has a site dedicated to charitable organizations with tips and information on making contributions.

How can I get my employees involved with my charity?

You could opt, as other businesses have, to ask employees to donate small amounts (like a dollar a week) in weekly, bi-monthly or monthly deductions from their paychecks and then agree that the company match that amount in donations. Alternatively, you could assist with fund raisers at which employee could volunteer to help. Employees could wear promotional apparel with both your company name and the name of your charity.

Can I write my donation off at tax time?

Some charities have ‘tax exempt’ status but not ‘tax deductible’ status It is best to find out from the IRS if your donation is tax deductible. Contributions are tax deductible if your charity has 501(c)3 tax exempt status with the IRS. Contributions to organizations with501(c)4 and 501(c)6 status are allowable as deductions as business expenses but not as charitable donations. Contact your local IRS office for more detailed information.

How often do I make a contribution?

There are many ways to contribute. You could give a onetime annual contribution or decide on your own contribution schedule with your charity. Donate with checks payable to the name of your charity. Don’t give cash. Ask for reciepts for non-monetary donations and keep lists and records of what a donation was and when it was given.

Are there ways I can donate to charity without giving money?

Many charities are equally appreciative of gifts as they are of cash donations. Plus you can make a non-monatary contribution and still get a tax deduction. Ask your charity what kinds of non-monetary contributions they accept. Customized promotional gifts and apparel highlighting both your company and your charity’s name are a great choice as gifts. These could take the form of customized T-shirts, gym bags, hats, lunch bags, pens. Promotional products have staying power and they are a proven, low cost method of generating interest in a business or cause.

Getting great SE ranking results in one month with your Article Marketing campaign? A lot of people ask this when they are new to Article Marketing.

There can be a lot of confusion when you first start your article marketing campaign. You may be doing what you think you’re supposed to, and it’s natural to look for results from your efforts after a short time. But submitting only a handful of articles is not enough to affect your Search Engine results in the short term. The truth is that it’s unrealistic to expect substantial results in one month with your Article Marketing by publishing a handful of Articles. The good news is that you’re not doing anything wrong, you just need to do more of it.

To understand how Search Engine rankings work, it helps to know how website marketing works as well.

Results Take Time – It may take 3-4 months before you see your rankings improve from your efforts, whether you are using article marketing or some other strategy. The reason for this is because the Search Engines take time to evaluate your site and determine your ranking. It may even take longer if your site is new, so relax and concentrate on the quality and relevancy of your articles.

Consistency Is Your Friend – You will need to submit articles consistently over a period of time in order to achieve your Ranking goals. Only submitting a small amount of Articles will not have the desired affect on your Rankings. Try to submit at least 8 articles a month every month for each website that you are marketing. Do that consistently on a long term basis and you will get the excellent results that you seek.

Keywords Terms – You must use your Keywords in the Title of your Article, the Anchor Text and the Body of the Article to optimize search engine ranking for that keyword term.

Changes In Keyword Rankings? – What you need to understand about Search Engines is they are designed to keep their sites “fresh” and “new”. The last thing they want is for their search results to remain constant for any length of time. Therefore, their algorithms are designed to constantly change and renew search results. Factors that affect your ranking include; changes on your site, changes in the way other sites are linking to you or other external SEO factors, what competitors are doing, and so on.

Ranking change for any amount of different reasons; like what computer you’re viewing them from, or where in the world you’re located; different countries around the world will give different results because of geographical relevancy. Expect your own rankings to change, not just on a daily basis, but on an hourly basis.

We are looking for a great ‘average’ position for your keywords over a long period of time, not a constant position. You will from time to time see your keyword position “fall” before they start to rise in the rankings. Don’t be too alarmed by temporary drops in your keyword rankings.
